Citizenship at Earl Mortimer

National Curriculum Citizenship at Earl Mortimer College and Sixth Form Centre

The College is proud to present some of the most proactive Citizenship in the county. Students at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 across England are entitled to Citizenship education. The way it is taught at Earl Mortimer College encompasses some of the best methods in use across the country.

Citizenship in the Curriculum

The College uses the so-called "cross curricular" system. No student has an hour on their timetable called Citizenship. Instead they receive their Citizenship education carefully woven into their regular subjects. Every subject and Faculty commits to delivering a formal Citizenship-related assessment annually at Key Stage 3.

Citizenship beyond the classroom

The College Council, Year Councils, Sports Council, Prefect Scheme, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and Language Leader courses provide students with lots of opportunities to use their Citizenship knowledge and skills. The aim is simple and powerful: affect positive change within (and often beyond) the College community to make things better for one and all. Some of our students even participate in countywide organisations such as the Herefordshire Youth Council and Shadow Board, affecting change for young people way beyond our local community. Indeed one former student, Carla Biddle, even secured a place on the national Youth Parliament shortly after graduating from the College a short time ago.

Citizenship Progress in Annual Reports

Every subject and Faculty assesses progress in Citizenship, so expect to see updates in students' Annual Reports. Indeed it is a formal requirement across England that Parents and Carers should receive updates each year.

Does it work?

Key Stage 3 attainment data regularly equal to or better than the College average. Participation rates in mock elections and curricular feedback research is high. Participation rates in Year and College Councils is high and productive. Look for regular updates in College newsletters.
